On January 22, 2010, GMU law students and the Arlington Campus community sponsored an urgent fundraiser to benefit the people of Haiti. The fundraiser reportedly raised between $1800-$2000 through donations alone. All the proceeds went to Partners in Health, a low-overhead and efficient medical relief organization already on the ground in Haiti providing much-needed medical relief services for those affected by last week's devastating January 12th earthquake. At the fundraiser, a number of valuable prizes were raffled off, including a BarBri coupon, bobbleheads, t-shirts, and signed hockey pucks from the Washington Capitals.
The event featured special guest speaker Tim Broas, attorney and regional director for Partners in Health. Mr. Broas characterized Haiti as a country in a "vicious cycle of disease and poverty" and stressed the need for people of all walks of life to donate what they can to provide assistance to the sick and the poor. Partners in Health works to bring modern medical care to poor communities in nine countries around the world, and has been in Haiti already for 20 years. In fact, Partners in Health has over 6,000 employees working in 12 hospitals in the region. The work of Partners in Health aims to care for Haitian patients and attempts to alleviate the root causes of disease in their communities.
