Career News

CAAS December Resume Review, Access, and Counselors: CAAS resources and counselors will be available through December 23. The office will reopen on January 4. If you would like a resume or cover letter reviewed prior to the holiday break, you should submit a draft by COB Thursday, December 17. Resumes and cover letters can be dropped off to Room 370; faxed to 703-993-8012; or emailed to lawcareer@gmu.edu in Word or PDF formats.

Public Service Career Fair Update: The annual Washington, DC/Baltimore Public Service Career Fair takes place at Mason on January 29. Students unable to attend the information session should pickup handouts in CAAS, including (1) detailed information on the Career Fair and a list of Career Fair important dates; and (2) tips for table talk. Employers invited to the fair include federal, state, and local government agencies and public interest organizations. These employers will primarily hire students for summer and school-year positions, with a few hiring for entry-level positions. Students must register at https://law-dcpscf-csm.symplicity.com/students/ to review participating employers. Beginning December 18, employer registration will be complete and students can bid for those employers conducting interviews or participating in resume collection. All bids must be complete by 11:59 pm on January 6. Contact Laurie Neff at lneff@gmu.edu or 703-993-8179 with questions.

Take Advantage of Our Network: Not sure about a particular practice area? Want to know what it's like to work for the government, a firm, or a trade association? To find alumni by practice area, employer, or location, try the on-line George Mason law alumni directory or www.martindale.com. To access the alumni directory, send your name, G number, status (JD candidate, visiting student, LLM), and daytime phone number to lawalum@gmu.edu, and you'll be sent a temporary student password. In addition, most of our alumni live in Virginia or DC and belong to or lead various bar associations. Get your name out there and learn about the market by attending a bar association event. A Select List of Legal Professional Associations is available in CAAS and in the Document Library on Symplicity.

Spring Jobs and Judicial Internships: Now is the time to start thinking about spring work. Spring part-time jobs often lead to paid summer positions. Private and public sector employers are posting now or accepting unsolicited applications; interested students should consult Symplicity as well as other job banks (consult the Popular Internet Sites list found in the Symplicity Document Library for ideas) from now through January. For unpaid positions, upperclass students may be eligible to receive credit through Mason's externship program. Students specifically interested in interning with a judge this spring or summer should monitor Symplicity and consult the list of judges who hire interns in the DC area found in the Document Library on Symplicity. Federal judges hire the earliest and some have begun to accept applications for the summer term.

Thanks for the update. You're right - now is the time to start preparing for spring jobs. Some people may think it's too early but there is a lot of competition and not a lot of good positions available, so start looking as soon as you can. (Continued…)
