Career, Academic and Alumni Services Update

Career News

First-Year Career Services Orientation and Events: First-year career services programming begins at the end of this month and runs throughout November. Sessions are offered for day and evening students, food is provided, and students will have an opportunity to mingle with counselors, upperclassmen, and alumni who have successfully navigated the career path. Small group career orientation sessions for all full-time students and part-time students intending to switch to the full-time program will be offered Thursday, October 29 -Wednesday, November 11 at 12:15 or Wednesday, November 11 at 5:00. A small group session for part-time students will be offered Monday, November 9 at 8:00 pm and again next semester. In addition to the small group career services orientation, all first-year students may participate in (1) the November 2 "No Spin Zone" at 5:00 with upperclassmen who will give first-years their unfiltered views of job hunting during law school; (2) individual counseling sessions (students may sign up beginning October 29); (3) legal resume and cover letter workshops; (4) training classes for Symplicity and the Washington, DC/Baltimore Public Service Job Fair; (5) advisory sessions on applying for 1L summer positions with federal agencies and large, national firms; and (6) the Shadowing/Mentor Program (see below). Watch the listservs for detailed information.

Alumni Shadowing and Mentoring Program: One of the greatest ways to learn about the legal profession is to talk to attorneys and listen and learn from them. CAAS organizes an Attorney Shadowing/Mentoring Program where first year students are matched, to the best of the school's ability, with an attorney according to field or employer of interest. All attorney-volunteers and students are invited to attend a meet-and-greet breakfast, where they can select a mutually convenient date when the student can observe a portion of the attorney's day or just spend some time discussing careers. Forms to request an alumni mentor will be available November 5 and due by November 18. The kickoff meet-and-greet breakfast will be held on January 13.

Day in the Life Series: Immigration Lawyers: The Day in the Life Series continues on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 5:00 with private and public sector immigration lawyers. The Room is 225 and, yes, pizza will be served. Alumni from DOJ and Homeland Security as well as area law firms will discuss their immigration work on behalf of the United States government, individuals, and corporate clients. RSVP on Symplicity.
