The APIL Auction is an institution at GMUSL. Held every year in the spring, the event brings together students, faculty, and alumni to raise funds for grants for law students working in the public interest sector. In years past, APIL has delivered a wide range of fun auction items, from White House tours to BarBri discounts to house cleanings. Students typically enjoy the social atmosphere, food, and drinks as they collude and bargain for their favorite items.
This year, APIL has made some drastic changes to the event. First, the event will be held on a Friday night instead of the middle of the week. The minds behind the auction hope to draw more students and alumni to the event without competing with evening classes. This is a boon for evening students, who often feel left out of the GMUSL social events.
The second big change is venue. In years past, the auction has been held at and catered by a nearby hotel (in recent years, the Hilton Arlington). This year, APIL has decided to change the venue to CarPool, the bar popular with GMUSL students. While the move to Friday makes sense, it is harder to explain this change in venue. The APIL auction has always been a somewhat classy event, with food, drink, and auctioneer dressed for the occasion. One can only assume that the change to CarPool is intended to draw more students, but relaxing the atmosphere may also result in drawing fewer faculty and alumni.
With changes in time and venue, I look forward to seeing the auction. No matter what the changes, the APIL auction promises to be a good time. Students should come out for one of the last chances to socialize, for the chance to win some phenomenal prizes, and for just the sheer fun of getting to use those silent auction paddles.
