Legally Blonde

This week is Part Two of the three-part series, "What I Thought Law School Would Be Like." The movie is "Legally Blonde," starring Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, and Jennifer Coolidge.

When I first saw this movie, I was in college. I was a junior, far more interested the mysteries of Modernist poetry than the possibility that I would, one day, go to law school. I liked the idea of law school, but I guess I just perceive it as something I would do for the rest of my life. Studying the subtextual relation between androgyny and modern identity of the poet in the works of Virginia Woolf and Wallace Stevens, however, that's the ticket to fame, riches, and respect! Ahh, if only you could have known me then...

Anyway, I'll sum up. I didn't think law school would be like "Legally Blonde." But, it is. Only there are more blondes. On to the reasons:

1. "On this Perfect Day" - Admit it. You knew someone in college, almost certainly a girl, who woke up to this song every morning to pump herself up for school. Its alright to admit, even, that you were that girl. That said, easily the most perfect intro to a movie for all time.

2. "The Harvard Conspiracy" - My theory goes like this: To keep up its prestige, Harvard conspires with Hollywood to appear prominently in a youth-oriented movie every 4-6 years. This cultural indoctrination ensures that every student with even a remote chance of being admitted will apply. You can trace this progression a long way: "Goodwill Hunting," "With Honors," "Scent of a Woman," "Dead Poets Society," etcetera, etcetera. Wicked smaht, huh?

Other colleges do it too. Anyone remember where Morgan Freeman's character in "Chain Reaction" went to law school? (Answer: Georgetown). Sorry, does anyone remember "Chain Reaction"? (Answer: Really? Do you want to be on my pub trivia team?) A prominent mention in a movie could have as much or greater promotional value as, say making the Final Four in basketball. I'm just saying.
