With Professor Green now teaching at William and Mary, I anticipated that my poker lessons would do very well at the auction this year. The next best thing, or the best thing in my opinion, to drinking cocktails with a man in his late 30's who has a toddler and invokes images of Mr. Bean, is learning to play a card game that, over years of practice, can earn you a modest income. Not to mention that I do not have a toddler. Professor Green-Bean. I miss the man.
Back to the subject of today's entry though, I did not anticipate my poker lessons going for $100,000. Not only is that more money than I earned last month in my poker tournament, but I have to question where a group of law students are able to come up with that much money.
Last week, Dean Polsby and the rest of the GMUSL administration held another Town Hall meeting. Reportedly, students directed their concerns at financial aid and the high cost of living in Arlington. Now, to be honest with you, I am pretty sure that the financial aid office will not look kindly upon the student who asks for an exception for his or her financial aid award because he or she got in a bidding war at the auction. While I encourage such incredibly generous support for public interest law, I remind the winning students that you must actually pay APIL the $100,000. However, if the rumors concerning the private funding for the bid from a law firm, which will remain unnamed, are true, please ignore paragraphs 2 and 3 of this entry. The fact that the-firm-which-will-not-be-named has been lobbying against public interest groups for years should just serve as an example for turning over a new leaf.
CLASS CANCELED 3/17/2006
I was doing well at the poker tables in Atlantic City last weekend. I accepted an invitation to stay and play for the week. Therefore, I will not be holding class today. This should not terribly upset anyone. It is St. Patrick's Day and most people should be consuming green liquids.
