		Advice for first-year students

Quindecim, Goucher College, MD

I used to be just like you.

Young, full of hope and dreams for the future. I wanted to be an astronaut, a writer, a sculptor, an Olympian. But then I came to Goucher- a joke, don't panic!

That's not true (except for the astronaut bit) - not because Goucher doesn't have the capability to change you, for better or worse, but because I didn't embrace or engage this capability.

Travis Helwig: Thank you, Vishal Aswani

A little more than two months ago, the house I grew up in was destroyed in a fire. Our financial situation became immediately unclear, and it seemed like I wouldn't be able to complete my senior year at the most expensive university in the country.

Over the summer, AU changed its student health insurance plan from Chickering to GM Southwest, a Blue Cross company. It was a relatively mundane change, done in the most part because GM Southwest provided similar benefits with a similar premium and also kept their annual cost-of-living increase lower than Chickering did.

Staff Editorial: All Tripled Up

The Eagle, American University, DC

It's not a housing crunch, but it sure is a situation. As many of you are aware, there are quite a few freshmen living in temporary triples. In fact, approximately 55 percent of the class of 2012, 873 students total, currently live in this situation. Due in part to an 18 percent increase in enrollment, this scenario represents both a great challenge and a great opportunity for AU.

Athletic Renovations Take Precedence Over Classrooms

The Hilltop, Howard University, DC

A first glance at the new turf on the football field or at the renovations that the swimming pool is currently undergoing is more than likely pleasing to the eye of a typical Howard student who is used to watching student-athletes perform on what seemed to have been makeshift athletic facilities.

Welcome home, class of 2012! You are entering a new stage of your life that is unequivocally essential to the well being of your social, financial, and familial future.

As a fifth year student, I have learned that everything that you do during your time here at the Mecca counts.

The benefits of bicycling

I got my first bike when I was a 9-year-old living in Israel. It was one of those little BMX bikes that a friend of mine got rid of when he upgraded to a full-size adult bicycle. He taught me how to ride it, and about a year later, my great uncle got me my own 21-speed bicycle, which I rode all the time.

A backyard view

We are all accustomed to the university making the news. Every time a remotely newsworthy event happens on the campus, regional and sometimes national media descend on the campus with their satellite trucks and attractive reporters faster than it takes to read the crime alert e-mail.
